Governance of Long-Term Challenges and Opportunities in Mining Operations and Mining Territories

21.11.2023

March 23, 2023 | 11:00 - 12:00 EDT | 12:00 - 13:00 BRT

Background:

In 2021 and 2022, SDSN and Geopark Quadrilátero Ferrífero (an SDSN Member) organized a number of webinars on mining and the SDGs, and also conducted a survey of participants to ascertain what would be of use to the group going forward. A number of participants expressed interest in having a forum to share work they are doing, learn about the best practices of others, and identify possible collaborators. SDSN and Geopark Quadrilátero Ferrífero aim to organize monthly webinars on topics of interest.

Event topic summary:

Mining operations and regions face many governance challenges. One is the tension between the short-term objectives of communities, governments, and stakeholders, and the longer-term objectives of mining sites (discovery through production), the SDGs, and the Paris Agreement. Join us for a conversation about solutions and opportunities around governance, and how addressing risks early can maintain competitiveness.

Audience:

We anticipate an audience of about 150 people, predominantly from academia and industry, and mostly from the Americas given the time of day.

Session schedule:

10.45 EDT

Speakers to join Zoom webinar early to check connection and audio.

  • Find a space that will remain quiet and uninterrupted during the event with a background that is clean and simple (e.g. with artwork, furniture, or bookshelves).
  • Ensure that your laptop is elevated to eye level so that you are looking directly at the camera.
  • Try to avoid sitting next to any windows or having direct sunlight in the background.

What are good practices we can do to escape the resource curse? We need new investments in mining to generate jobs and tax revenue, which will lead to more development, investment, and economic diversification. This is the ideal scenario, promoted by the World Bank in the 70s and 80s. We saw limited job creation, weak economic effects, and little effect on development. Often it led to corruption, concentration of power among oligarchs, etc. This is a big reason for contemporary calls for transparency, accountability, reporting, etc. There are many ways to predict if mining could precipitate into a curse, such as the fact that the resource is finite, it is capital-intensive, subject to boom and bust cycles, and can cause environmental harm.
